Default Clorox Bath

Hi. I have a question as to the safety of the clorox bath. Bleach is harmful in all other cases so how could it possibly be safe to soak your produce? If you do soak it, what if you oversoak? Is everything ruined if you soak for too long? Thanks!

Ann Louise has addressed your concerns in one of her prior blog posts. Click here to read it. And no, your food won't fall apart if you leave it too long in the bleach solution. And always rinse well with plain water before drying and storing. (I've been using the bleach solution since 2004 and I can not only claim excellent health, but also confirm that my produce lasts longer after the bleach bath. )

Another questions about the Chlorox bath... do you use regular strength or the concentrated strength? (I don't even think you can get Chlorox brand name stuff in the regular strength can you?)

You'd use regular strength Clorox brand...I've had no problems buying it, and didn't even know concentrated existed!

The difficulty of finding regular clorox over the ultra stuff was addressed by ALG on the last cruise I attended. She said to use half the bleach if using ultra-clorox.
Does that help?

Can the clorox bath be used with city water or does it have to be purified water?

Thank you, Ms. Gittleman.

I had been doing the clorox bath that way but was afraid maybe there was a reason I shouldn't.

Back to that water question. I have well water, which we don't drink at home, but use for other things. I know our water in this area is high in nitrates but when we bought our home 15 years ago, it tested OK, we've never re-tested. We worry about ecoli because of a shallow well and flood irrigation, but again never tested. We have a water softener because of extremely hard hard water, but we can't ever get it so soft that it gets a salty taste to it.

Do I need to not do the Clorox bath or do I need to modify it at all for water types?
