OK... I've posted before on this topic but it's still out there, so I'm going to re-post the info and hopefully, some of you will get as fired up as I am and write a letter to the authors. This is what AOL has as a reivew on the FFP. Please, get on this and do some letter writing to the "powers that be" at the magazine and AOL.
There's nothing wrong with telling people to exercise, get adequate sleep and record their daily progress. In fact, these are great overall health and weight-loss strategies. However, it's hard to buy into the whole concept of "fat-flushing." Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., offers skimpy scientific support and makes several eating and exercise recommendations that sound not only flimsy but downright strange. In the exercise chapter, for example, Gittleman tells dieters to "bounce off fat" on a mini-trampoline to remove those nasty cellulite-like deposits on hips and thighs. Ah, if only it were this easy. Does the diet take and keep weight off? Who knows? There are no clinical studies to support the diet's effectiveness, just anecdotal data. Is the diet healthy? It's hard to tell. This sounds like another version of low-carb dieting with some strange food-combining twists thrown in. Without long-term data, it's difficult to give the plan a thumbs-up. What do the experts say? The notion of the liver being a fat-burning furnace that is revved up by eating certain foods "deserves to be flushed," says registered dietitian Jane Kirby, who reviewed the diet for her book 'Dieting for Dummies' (John Wiley Publishing, second edition, 2003). "There's no science behind this claim. It's just a low-calorie diet. Most people lose weight when calories are cut this low." Noted weight-loss researcher Judith S. Stern, Sc.D., R.D., says "The liver doesn't need to be detoxified. Give me a break." And muscle, not the liver, burns fat. Stern, who is the vice president of the American Obesity Association, lumps this new book with others that make unsupported weight-loss claims. "All of these kinds of books offer pseudoscience," she says. "Pseudoscience is wonderful because it promises you everything, but that's all it is -- a fantasy." Who should consider the diet? Nobody Bottom Line: It's another low-calorie, restricted carb diet, albeit based on a bit more convoluted logic than some of the plans out there. Sure, you'll lose weight, but that's due to fewer calories, not a fat-burning liver. Maureen Callahan, MS, RD, is a frequent contributor to Health, Cooking Light, and Real Simple. She is a recipient of the James Beard Award for her diet and nutrition reporting. Published April, 2004 © 2004 Health Publishing, Inc. Jamie, much as I'd LOVE to kick AOL into seeing sense, they don't give a ...er...they don't seem interested in the opinions of folks who don't use their ISP. Short-sighted of 'em, IMVVHO. HOwever, I DO urge all AOL-using FF'ers to make their voices heard as Jamie recommends!
